products i love: natural vitality

image

There are a lot of supplement companies out there these days. Some great, some not so great. So when a really good product comes my way, I feel the need to tell everyone I know about it. But for some reason, these recommendations never quite make it onto my blog. Which is silly really and I apologize for my negligence in this matter.

Recently I was contacted by Natural Vitality to try out some of their products and I was definitely intrigued. I am not a stranger to the company having used their product Natural Calm before. Not only did I find improved sleep when I used Natural Calm, I actually noticed a reduced frequency and severity in migraines. What I didn’t realize is that they actually have a range of supplements and I get to share some of those with you all today!

Natural Vitality stands out to me as a great supplement company for the following reasons:

  • high quality, organic supplements, proven with research
  • use liquid and water-soluble powder forms to enhance absorption
  • a portion of all earning goes into their Natural Revitalization environmental action initiative, a program that supports organic farming and environmental stewardship
  • a focus on obtaining quality ingredients, from quality production and growing methods

With so many companies out there these days using cheap fillers and difficult to absorb formulations, Natural Vitality is a breath of fresh air!

Now here are the products I got to try:

natural energy

Energy 28 is a natural energy supplement that uses golden chlorella, maca, superfruits and  24 organic fruits and vegetables. It provides energy without using refined sugar and caffeine.

This was a little sweet and a little sour and while they say you can eat it straight from the pack, I found it difficult to get down. BUT when mixed with water to make a “juice” or slipped into a pre-workout smoothie it tasted better and provided quite the boost! I took a pack right before heading to a birthday party and although I was completely exhausted before going, I managed to stay awake until 5 in the morning. Totally unlike me but I was sooo energized! Beware taking at night ;)

Organic Life Vitamins: This is a liquid vitamin supplement that can be taken as is, or mixed in water or a smoothie. It was named 2013’s Best Multivitamin in Delicious Living magazine which is pretty cool. I liked the flavour of this one better than the Energy 28 and loved the colour- I felt like I was drinking orange juice! It contains aloe, different fruits and veggies and ionized minerals to make a multi-vitamin that delivers a ton of nutrition and surpasses many Daily Recommended Values (which, please, are too low anyway). It’s a great way to kick start the day and I really enjoyed taking it!

While I liked these products, one thing I didn't love is that the Energy 28 and Organic Life Vitamin both contain organic agave nectar as a sweetener. I don’t use a lot of agave as a sweetener these days as I believe there are better options.  However, I don't think a little of it is the worst thing and it wouldn't stop me from using these products. Just keep that in mind when using these!

minerals

Plant-Sourced Minerals in green apple flavour: This supplement provides chelated minerals sourced from a prehistoric plant deposit called Senonian Vegetate, formed approximately 70 million years ago. This vegetate is mineral-rich organic soil derived from plants and naturally protected from mineral depletion. This supplement delivers 70+ trace minerals! While it doesn’t actually tell you what minerals you were getting and what quantity (can you imagine the label on that??) I did notice an improvement in my energy when I took it. The flavour was nice and mild, not too sweet and good mixed in water or added to a smoothie where it was barely noticeable. This one is sweetened with stevia which I liked.

IMG_2774

Natural Calm in Raspberry-Lemon flavour: a magnesium supplement which is mixed in water. This particular flavour was Raspberry-Lemon but it also comes in Natural.

Why would we want a magnesium supplement? Magnesium is an mineral critical for so many reactions and processes in the body. One of it’s most famous purposes though, is as the anti-stress mineral! But it can only do this when it is properly balanced with calcium. Too much calcium and magnesium is depleted and relaxation is difficult to do. Natural Calm gives you an ionized (and therefore very absorbable) form of calcium to help balance the ratio helping to reduce things like stress, anxiety, fatigue and headaches. I myself have experienced reduction in these things with regular use. The raspberry-lemon flavour is nice, not too sweet and delicious hot and cold. This one is also sweetened with stevia, while the natural flavour isn't sweetened at all.

I decided to create my own little “slushie” with this product and I fell in love! This product fizzes when you add it to water, giving my blended drink that token slishie feel. Drank a couple hours before sleep and you will be sleeping like a baby, I promise you.

I added a banana to the mix for a good dose of potassium, another mineral that promotes relaxation and improves sleep by reducing the number of times you wake up and reduces muscle tension. Water and ice is all that’s left to create this delicious anti-stress and sleep-promoting drink!

“Sweet Dreams” Slushie (Vegan, Gluten-free, Sugar-free, Paleo, SCD)

Ingredients (serves 1)

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tsp Natural Calm (Lemon Raspberry or Natural Flavour)
  • 1 frozen banana
  • a few cubes of ice

Instructions

Put the water in the blender and add the Natural Calm. It will fizz for a bit and let it do so until most of the fizzing is done. Add in the banana and ice and blend. Serve as is or chill in the freezer a little longer to help it get even more slushie! You could always add more ice but that would dilute the flavour.

Overall, this company brings stellar quality supplements that you know are providing significant health benefit. You can feel good about spending your money on these because they not only nourish you, but they also give back in support of sustainable farming practices. I noticed an improvement in my energy levels and overall health while taking them and would definitely recommend them!

Note: While I was provided these product free of charge, I was in no way onbligated to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.

Oh and for a quick little shameless self-promotion: if you could all head over to Ethical Ocean and vote for my Raw Chocolate-Coated Key Lime Pie, in the Eat What’s Good Vegan Recipe Contest, that would be swell. You can vote everyday so even if you voted once I would sure appreciate a second (or third, or tenth!). Thanks!

Here we are, another Monday! The last of my Mondays in Kingston for a while! Soon it’s off to the big, bad city ;) It was so nice to spend the last weekend at home, not working! I got to relax, see some friends and get stuff done. I even bought myself my first ever young thai coconut and hacked it open. Oh man the water in those things is ridiculously delicious. I can’t wait to experiment with the meat!

Two more workdays, three at home then that’s it! With an early birthday celebration to boot. When you put it that way it sounds ridiculously close.

Thank you all for your great response to my guest post over at Go Bake Yourself on Saturday! It was so fun to write for a little of a different audience and show people how delicious healthy is. If you haven’t checked it out, please do so here. I shared a recipe for Raw Pineapple Shortbread bars that are a great way to say goodbye to summer. While I’m sad summer is over, I am so excited for the possibilities of fall. Plus you know what fall means? PUMPKIN. So pumped. In fact I may have already created a little something pumpkin-y. I just couldn’t resist!

Anyway, pumpkin is not what this post is about. What this post is about is chocolate. More specifically frozen chocolate delciousness.

When I decided to change up my diet for a while to kick this candida business to the curb, the thing I missed the most was smoothies. There’s something about blending up a frozen banana with other fruits, veggies and other add-ins that is like nothing else. I was missing it so much that I began to search for alternatives. I tried out a cranberry smoothie with an avocado for creaminess and while it was good, it wasn’t what I was looking for.

Then I happened upon something magical. Psyllium seed powder.

This stuff thickens and gels a mixture like crazy! Seriously- put in some almond milk and a few other powders with a little psyllium and you get this thick gel. As soon as I discovered these powers, I delved in a little deeper.

Psyllium seed is an amazing source of fiber. Just to give you an idea, psyllium husks contain 71g of fiber per 100g, whereas oat bran, a commonly recommended source of fiber contains only 5g per100g. Now you would never eat 100g of psyllium seed, but a little goes a long way! It helps us feel full for longer and helps clear out our digestive track. In this sense it is great for loads of different digestive issues including irritable bowl syndrome and ulcerative colitis. It has also been shown to improve many other aspects of health such as:

  • reducing cholesterol
  • prevents gallstones
  • facilitates weight loss
  • stabilizes blood sugar
  • and even prevents against cancers like colon and breast!

I had so much fun playing with this ingredient! It doesn’t really have a taste so you can throw it in anything without worrying about a funny taste and when you toss in some ice, I swear, the texture is so similar to a smoothie made with a frozen banana. Almost milkshake-like. Throw in a little more ice. Well you’ve got yourself some ice cream. How cool is that?

IMG_2101

Psyllium seed husks are available whole or in powdered form. In this recipe I used the powder so I’m not sure how the whole husks would work but definitely give it a shot!

I also included an incredible source of omega 3s in the form of either chia or flax seeds. Both work great and provide an easy way to get your daily dose in. Plus they help to thicken this that much more!

This milkshake or ice cream is incredibly rich tasting and smooth. It is packed with fiber from the psyllium, omega 3s from the chia or flax and antioxidants from the cacao powder. Feel free to include 1/2 or all carob if you prefer to avoid the caffeine and get some extra calcium. Sweetened only with stevia it’s truly the healthiest milkshake or ice cream you will ever have! Well I mean, you could always blend some greens in there if you wanted, for bonus points.

IMG_2121

Omega-3 and Fiber Rich Chocolate Milkshake (or Ice Cream) (Vegan, Gluten-free, Sugar-free)

Ingredients (1 drink/bowl)

  • 3/4 cup almond milk
  • 2 tbsp cacao powder (or 1/2 carob powder or all carob)
  • 1 tbsp ground flax seeds or chia seeds (gets a little thicker with chia, and I used whole chia seeds, no need to grind before)
  • 1/2 tbsp psyllium seed powder
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 7 drops chocolate stevia (or to taste)
  • pinch sea salt
  • 1 cup ice for a milkshake, or about 1 1/2 cups for ice cream
  • optional: 1 tsp instant coffee or herbal coffe substitute like Dandy Blend (helps give it a super rich flavour)

Instructions

Add everything, except the ice to a blender and blend. It should get really thick. Then add the ice and blend again until the ice is fully crushed and incorporated! Serve with a straw or spoon and enjoy your delicious treat!

I'm sharing this recipe on Slightly Indulgent Tuesdays, Fat Tuesday, Real Food Wednesdays, Allergy-Free Wednesday, Gluten Free Fridays, Foodie Friends Friday and Wellness Weekends!

Hope you all have wonderful Mondays! Remember, it’s the start of a new week, with no mistakes in it :)

wiaw #20- sips and salads

Happy Wednesday everyone!

Firstly, I just want to say I’m so excited you all loved the recipe for the raw veggie stir-fry I posted on Monday! Sometimes I wonder whether anyone will be interested in something so simple. But you guys definitely appreciate the simple things in life ;) And for that, I thank you!

Since it’s Wednesday, that can only mean on thing! It’s time for some What I Ate Wednesday fun. For those of you who are new to the idea, this is a weekly blog party hosted by Jenn at Peas and Crayons where foodie bloggers post about their daily eats so we can all drool over each other’s deliciousness. Head over to Jenn’s blog to check out all the other posts!

This week, I’ll share a couple recipes with you (!!) and also give you a couple sneak peaks to others that are coming soon. And since July’s theme is fitness, I’ll share with you the workout I did as well. It wasn’t much, I wasn’t feeling too awesome. BUT I had a really good day of eats so without further ado let’s get into it!

What I Ate Wednesday- Sips and Salads!

This was a delicious day of refreshing beverages and salads!

warm lemon water to start my day!

insert a mental workout here. Well maybe not a workout per say, but definitely a mental exercise!- meditation! I decided to join in with the 21 Day Meditation Challenge where each day you are emailed a link to a short guided meditation with a focus on Love. This was Day 2 and so far I’m really enjoying it! I gave meditation a good shot during my cleanse a couple months ago, but it has fallen to the wayside since. I found it helped with my stress levels a lot so I’m doing this challenge as a way to get back into the habit!

IMG_1748

I decided to take a break from the green smoothies today in favour of a Red Velvet Smoothie! Don’t worry, there are still a veggie in there though ;) This was a nice change of pace and it really tasted like the cake! Scroll down for the recipe!

IMG_0148

Next up I had some of my Raw Pizza Bites. These are seriously so good- you feel like you’re biting into a cheese pizza- but it’s raw, grain-free and vegan! Recipe coming soon ;)

Update: recipe for Raw Pizza Bites!

IMG_0149

Next up at work I had a salad with a Mediterranean theme. I had some mixed greens with artichoke hearts, black olives, tomatoes, quinoa and sunflower seeds with a simple lemon juice and hemp oil dressing with fresh ground pepper. This was a super satisfying light lunch (which I ate at 10 am…my work schedule is weird…)

Tony Horton's 10-Minute Trainer®

Came home and did my workout! Today I did a quick once since I had to go back out soon and I was really tired. I did the cardio routine from Tony Horton’s 10 Minute Trainer. Now I am not a big Tony Horton fan…I tried P90X a few years ago and only got a couple weeks in because I found him a little annoying and couldn’t listen to him anymore! But these 10 minute routines are great! Small doses of Tony are best :) He really works you for those 10 minutes!

I also worked on my wall sit. I’m up to 2 min 45 seconds!

I find the key to this is to watch something while you’re doing it and don’t put your hands on your legs like in the picture! I found when I did that it made the pose easier- I would push on my thighs with my hands, lessening the load on my core. Keep your hands off!

IMG_1718

After this workout I had a little time to kill before heading out so I snacked on some of these cookies- Quinoa Chocolate Chip Cookies to be exact. I made them for a staff potluck a while ago and they were very well received so I had to make another batch so I could share them with you all! I have a recipe coming up for these as well. I’m going to pretend I didn’t eat 4 of these…

Update: recipe for Quinoa Chocolate Chip Cookies!

IMG_1770

When I got back home I was miserable- it was sooo hot out yesterday and my car’s air conditioning isn’t the best. So when I got back home I felt drained and dehydrated. So I whipped up this Blueberry Peach Kombucha Slushy that was inspired by this drink from Gena at Choosing Raw. Scroll down for the recipe!

IMG_1776

For dinner, I was so tired, I was honestly going to have a bowl of cereal. But then I remembered that I was going to have to post photos of what I ate. Not wanting to be boring, I decided to whip up this salad instead. Thank you WIAW for saving me from a boring, uninspired dinner ;)This is a Sweet Potato and Lentil Salad with a Coconut Curry Dressing. It’s a great way to have a curry, but without the heaviness of the traditional preparations. Not going to lie, I snacked on one more cookie to fuel me through the prep. Recipe coming soon!

Update: recipe for Sweet Potato and Lentil Salad Coconut Curry Dressing!

After dinner I sipped on some tea and indulged in a little raw chocolate.

Now for the recipes!

Red Velvet Smoothie (Vegan, Gluten-free, Sugar-Free, Raw)

This smoothie tastes like a dessert but it healthy enough for breakfast! The beets give it a great colour and an earthy sweetness! The optional ingredients give it a little more staying power, but are, of course, optional!

  • 1 medium beet, peeled and chopped
  • 1 apple, cored
  • 1/2 cup nondairy yogurt (I used So Delicious Coconut in plain)
  • 2 tbsp cacao powder
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • pinch cinnamon
  • stevia to taste (I added 2 drops chocolate stevia)
  • Optional additions:
    • 1/2 a frozen banana
    • 1 tsp flax seeds
    • a few almonds
    • protein powder (I added 1/2 a scoop of Sunwarrior Warrior Blend in Natural)

Put all ingredients in a blended and blend away! Serve with some cacao nibs sprinkled on top!

IMG_1765

Blueberry Peach Kombucha Slushy (Vegan, Gluten-free, Sugar-free)

This beverage is insanely refreshing and filled with probiotic goodness from the kombucha. The ginger gives it a bit of a kick!

  • 1 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1/2 cup frozen peach slices
  • 1 cup kombucha (I used my homebrewed kombucha which is a green tea base but use whatever your favourite is)
  • 1 tsp fresh grated ginger

Pop it all in a blender and blend!

I just noticed how similar both those drinks look. Haha oops. I promise they taste different!

That’s it for me today! Have a wonderful day and check back soon for one of the teaser recipes!

Which recipe would you all rather see, the “Raw Pizza Bites” or “Sweet Potato and Lentil Salad with a Coconut Curry Dressing”?

To be honest, as I write this I am not feeling my best. I got results from my doctor the other day and despite our best efforts, my iron levels have not improved, in fact they have gotten worse somehow and my B12 levels aren’t great either, despite taking supplements. He’s ordered a whole new panel of tests for me to get done because we’re clearly missing something. This is so frustrating especially since those silly iron supplements have been making my stomach upset for a month and a half. I have been doing everything right. I eat loads of greens, have given up coffee and take my supplements. It’s disheartening too because my doctor isn’t really asking me how I feel about anything or asking about my diet. All his messages are relayed through a nurse. To add to that he’s not able to see me again for more tests until the end of August. Until then he hasn’t given me any suggestions, I’m just supposed to sit here. I am a little lost as to what I’m supposed to be doing and feel like I’ve been hung out to dry. It’s like I’ve been slotted into a category which has a pre-determined, step-by-step process assigned to it, rather than being considered as the individual I am. We all have different lifestyles and bodies so shouldn’t approaches to health be more personalized? I know my health issues do not even come close to what many people have to deal with, but I can’t help but be a little disheartened. Have any of you experienced situations like this with your health and/or your doctor?

While my journey towards solving my energy and digestive issues has hit this hitch, I’m trying to remain positive! I’m going to continue seeking out dietary sources of iron (but I’m stopping those pills) and start taking regular digestive enzymes and probiotics. Clearly my body is having difficulty absorbing nutrients for some reason or another so I’m going to to support it best I can. I’ll also try and stay active, but honour how I’m feeling and take rest days as needed.

I’m also trying to keep optimistic and I’m hoping the power of positive thinking works wonders.

=)

Oh Barney, so wise!

Listening to this adorable song has been helping loads too :)

Ok, that little vent is now OVER! No more wallowing in self-pity, I promise.

The real purpose of today’s post is to share with you a new smoothie recipe! Inspired by this Snappy Cucumber Mango Salad by Daily Bites, it packs quite the flavour punch!

This is definitely an interesting and intriguing smoothie, one that invites you to discover new components each time you sip! The ingredients list might seem a little out there compared to other fruit smoothies but I promise it totally works.  The cilantro gives it an Indian-inspired flavour, the ginger adds a little kick and the cucumber and lime keep everything fresh!

In addition to having all sorts of crazy flavour, this is also incredibly detoxifying and will help aid digestion. Cilantro has a detox effect on the body where it binds to heavy metals like mercury and helps remove them from the body. It is also produces digestive enzymes and stimulates digestions through peristalsis (the movements and contractions of the stomach). Mango produces digestive enzymes as well and ginger is a great stomach soother.

I hope you all give this smoothie a chance! Coriander lovers only though ;)

Mango Cilantro Smoothie (Vegan, Gluten-free, Refined Sugar-free, Raw)

This smoothie is a little sweet, a little savoury with a definite kick. Perfect for hot summer days, or even cool summer nights.

  • 1 cup frozen mango chunks
  • 1 cup cucumber (quartered and sliced)
  • 1/2 cup + 2 tbsp coconut water (or more to desired consistency, could also use plain water)
  • 2 tbsp chopped coriander
  • 1 tsp fresh chopped ginger
  • 1 tsp agave (might need a little more if you are using water)
  • juice of 1/2 a lime
  • pinch sea salt

Throw it all into a smoothie and blend. Serve with a cucumber slice for a cocktail feel!

I am submitting this recipe to Allergy Free Wednesday and  Wellness Weekends.

Now before I go, I owe you guys a few pictures from the Boston trip I took last month! I’m a little late on these so please forgive me!
